It is a difficult decision whether to go for the smaller images or the larger ones and whether to add that extra step of clicking to see the larger one. I know what you mean about not being able to see as much detail in the small versions. I do have control over the size of both the thumbnail and the "full size" versions so I may still play with this a bit.
