The ‘Crack of Dawn’?

Being a San Francisco Bay Area resident, I’m aware of the work of Chronicle/SFGate photographer Frederic Larson, especially his “Mystical Photography” photoblog that features daily photographs from around the Bay. (He does get around the Bay Area, and often before the rest of us are even up in the morning!)

But I just have to wonder about today’s image and its title. That’s all I’ll say. Well, except for, “groan….”

Steve wades into Upper Hamilton Lake below Kaweah Gap – High Sierra Trail, Sequoia National Park, California.

Upper Hamilton Lake was our goal on the second night of our August 2008 9-day trans-Sierra backpack trip from Crescent Meadow in Sequoia National Park to Whitney Portal. This beautiful (and popular) lake is set in a deep bowl below Kaweah Gap, the pass across the Great Western Divide that we would cross the next morning.

Eastern Sierra Fall Color 2008 is Coming Soon

Autumn Sunset, Monitor Pass

While New Englanders will scoff, Californians have their own spectacular fall color display in the eastern Sierra Nevada when the aspens and other trees turn red, orange, yellow, golden, and more around the beginning of October each year.

I’ve been “chasing the aspens” for some years now, and every year at about this time I start to look forward to visiting and photographing them – and I join in the speculation regarding the times of peak color, how the weather may affect this, where to find the best displays, and so forth.

Today’s post is just a reminder that the aspen color is now little more than a month away – I’ll post more on this topic during the next few weeks.

Black and white photograph of Big Sur coastline with tree covered ridges descending to the shoreline and fading into the distance.

This is yet another in the series of photographs I made on a long drive up the Big Sur coastline during the summer of 2008. The landscape photographer goes into overload on this drive – there is just too much to shoot. This photograph is a stitch of a couple 12MP full frame DSLR images.

New Book on Night Photography

Excerpted from the Night Photography blog by Andy Frazer:

Night and Low-Light Photography This has been a busy summer for night photography books. First, Troy Paiva‘s long-awaited second book Night Vision: The Art of Urban Exploration comes out. Next, Jill Waterman’s new book Night and Low-Light Photography was released early this month…

Although I haven’t read the book yet, Andy – whose work appears in the book, along with that of other night photographers from the Bay Area and beyond – sure makes it sound worth a look. Follow the link to Andy’s site to see the whole post… and a lot more interesting stuff from the world of night photography.
