Shoreline, Upper Young Lake

Shoreline, Upper Young Lake

Meadows and rocks along the shoreline of upper Young Lake with Sierra Crest peaks reflected the distance, Yosemite National Park.

During the last week of July I backpacked to the Young Lakes area of the Yosemite High Sierra near Tuolumne Meadows to spend the better part of four days visiting and photographing the lakes and other features of this area. I’ve been here many times, but this is the first time that I simply stayed put for several days and visited all three Young Lakes and Roosevelt Lake.

The three Young Lakes are all within about a mile of one another, strung along a creek below the ridge running out the Ragged Peak. Each has a distinct personality, and it isn’t surprising that the upper lake is the most alpine of the three, mostly surrounded by open sub-alpine meadows, a sparse forest of small trees, and open views of the surrounding peaks at or near the crest of the Sierra Nevada range.

  1. Ah, you are on to my tricks, Inge. I’d like to tell you that I use a remote satellite uplink, carry a laptop, download and process my photos in my bivy sack in the evening while in the back-country. On second thought, that would be really, really obsessive wouldn’t it!?

My blog environment allows me to place posts “in the queue” and schedule them for later publication. I generally try to have at least a week’s worth of photos already lined up and ready for automatic posting at all times. During really productive periods I’ve been known to have a month of photos ready to go ahead of time – and, boy, does that take the pressure off! On the worst occasions I may sometimes have to scramble to get something ready the night before. (At the current time the queue is about a week deep, so photographs from my most recent backpack trip into the upper Sabrina Basin area should appear early next week.)

When I’m on the road or trail, I always have plenty of stuff ready to go so that no one but me and my wife will know I’m away. :-)

    Dan

  2. Once again an amazing capture. Thank you again for bringing the Sierra High Country to me as I am in no shape to backpack there myself. On one other note, how do you update this site on a daily basis, when you are out and about for several days?
