Point Lobos and Beyond
Posted on 02 January 2010
The weather service was reporting very large surf along the Pacific coast today, so I decided to head down towards Point Lobos and do some photography. It seems that I wasn’t the only one! Point Lobos was so packed that there was no parking left, and many cars were parked out on the highway. I changed plans, kept driving south, and ended up shooting along the Big Sur coast instead.

Oh my, and I almost went down to Point Lobos today myself. And I was even considering an alternative plan of driving down to Big Sur as well. If I had, I might have run into you! As it was, I just couldn’t quite get my inner engine going to get it together and go. I have been off work for over a week starting with December 24 and I have not gone anywhere. I’ve barely left the house. I was almost going to head to Bishop earlier this week for some sunrise photography of Mount Tom, but then ended up buying a set of new tires for both cars and that cost so much I decided to stay home. Then I thought I would do nearby day trips and I didn’t even get it together for that. Maybe it’s just as well. My batteries were just about drained and mentally, I really needed to recharge. Now the problem is that come Monday, I’ll be ready to get out and go somewhere except I have to go back to work. Aaarrrggghh. Oh well, at least I still have a job to go to which is more than a lot of people can say these days. But I still should have gone somewhere!
When I got there about 10, both the Whalers cove and Sea Lion Point parking lots were full. I end up at Weston Beach. The waves were big, but not huge. The trail down to Sea Lion Point was open. When I left around 1, all of the parking lots were full and they were only letting cars in as people were leaving. Pictures to follow.
Back to (other) work for me on Monday, too. My trip yesterday was a fairly spontaneous one; I wasn’t planning on going down there until I heard the weather forecast, and that was probably already past 10:00 a.m., Tom.
The waves were, as Tom says, “big, but not huge.” Though even big can be impressive, as was the case a ways down the coast later in the afternoon.
