Photographic Musing of the Day

Posted on 01 February 2010

If we lived in some alternate universe in which the current level of digital photographic technology (digital backs/cameras, digital post-processing, and high end inkjet printing) and the current level of chemical photography technology both appeared in the world simultaneously and photographers were asked to make a choice, would anyone actually chose the wet chemistry darkroom over the digital “darkroom?”

I would do what I’m currently doing: ‘Digital’ for what matters and for what I would really use in most situations, and ‘Wet’ for fun stuff and experimentation.

Not me. I’ll leave the chemistry darkroom to the fanatics. Anything to not have any junk/toys taking up more space–the reason I purchase MP3s, and soon ebooks.

In art, there are different media that people can use, whether oils or acrylics or water color or even charcoal or whatever. I can’t paint but I can appreciate that different artists like to use a favorite media or maybe a combination of them for their art.

And whereas I don’t have a chemistry darkroom I still like to play with film. I certainly take far more pictures digitally these days but I still find film loads of fun and a challenge. While technology moves on and you can do stuff digitally that you could never dream of doing with film, I hope film never goes away.
