Morning sunlight shines through the edge of the forest along the rocky shoreline of Lower Young Lake, Yosemite National Park, California.

When I got up on this late-summer morning at Lower Young Lake, my first goal was to walk around the end of the lake and into the forested area shown along the shoreline in this photograph – but as I reached the lake near my camp I decided to first photograph the shoreline forest and trees from a bit further back. There are, as is probably apparent, several layers to this scene: the reflecting surface of the water with logs and other things below the surface and seen through the reflections, the rocks along the shoreline, behind that the edge of the forest interspersed with a few more boulders and bits of sunlit meadow, and far beyond the rocky face of the ridge that rises behind the lake.

  • Dan,

I can only imagine how peaceful it must have been in this place on this morning. As always, your images from the Sierras are inspirational and hugely enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.

  • David, it was a very peaceful and light-filled morning. This mid-September time of year in the Sierra is when the crowds diminish and the weather – unless a little early front comes through – is typically sunny and mild. The light somehow seems more golden than at any other time

    Thanks,

    Dan

  • hi dan

i occasionally look at your website!! — this picture reminds me how the same image really never looks the same– light makes all the difference!

i distinctly remember how john would wake me up at all hours of the morning ( he was often working into the wee hours) to come and look how the sun reflects off the windows of the buildings in our neighborhood — 32nd story west side manhattan, with central park a few blocks away….gorgeous shades of pink and gold…. sky sometimes blue, really all colors….

  • Thanks, Celia! You are certainly right about the light – it never is the same, and it makes all the difference. I know this spot very well, having probably spent at least a couple weeks of my life camped at this Lower Young Lake, at times ranging from early summer when the snow was still melting to early autumn when everything goes golden and brown here. On this morning the light had just come over the ridge whose lower slopes are visible beyond the trees and it was slanting across some of the upper slopes as it backlit these shoreline trees.
