Gary Crabbe

A few weeks ago I posted some messages here and there around the web concerning questions I had about a particular usage of some of my photographs – a type of usage with which I have no experience. Gary Crabbe was one of the first to get back to me, responding via PM to a post I left at the Luminous-Landscape forum.

Due to a variety of circumstances (including my travel and some things in Gary’s life that you can read about at his blog) we did not get to talk until today, when I finally had the time to call him up. Although I already has some idea of who Gary is (from hearing a Jim M Goldstein podcast interview with him, from following Gary’s blog, and from seeing quite a bit of his work) it was great to get to talk to him. I want to thank Gary for his time and advice – not every photographer responds that way to a call like mine, and my positive impressions were only reinforced by his generosity and help – and to bring your attention to his photography.

What are YOU shooting this weekend?

Just saw a twitter (ahem, a tweet..) from Jim Goldstein asking what folks are shooting on this spring weekend. My immediate plan is to get out and photograph some of the “impossibly green” California grassland and some spring wildflowers this weekend – but also to prepare for an upcoming visit to Death Valley.

What are you shooting this weekend and beyond?

Do You Have a Free Day or Two?

If so, find some time to wander about in Jim Goldstein’s list of ‘the best of 2008’ from 92 (!) photograhers. Amazing! And thanks, Jim!

Yes, my 2008 favorites are in the Jim’s list, too.

Welcome to Visitors from 1001 Noisy Cameras

Hello and welcome to visitors who arrived here by way of the link in the Discover News Sites and Blogs post at 1001 Noisy Cameras today. (Yes, I did notice the spike in traffic!)

Since many of you are here for the first time, I’ll offer a few words about this blog. It began some years ago as an exercise in in “photographic practice.” With a background in music, I appreciate the importance of and need for regular practice when it comes to developing and maintaining my skills – in photography this includes the ability to see beyond the superficial along with the skills of post processing and much more. So the initial goal of the site was that I would post a new photograph every day. I’ve been doing that for a long time now, so if you return here you’ll continue to see new daily photographs. (An RSS feed is available for this site for those who want to keep up with new post automatically.)

From time to time I also post on a variety of photographic subjects: favorite photographers, shooting locations, my experience with equipment and techniques I use, links to articles and posts by others, and so forth.

Site members can comment on the posts, and I invite you to join the site if you would like to participate in this dialog about photographic issues – there is a site registration link near the top of the page.

Thanks for visiting, and have a great 2009!

Dan

(If you come back later today, I should have my “best of 2008” post on line.)
