Breakfast on the window sill, Manhattan, December 2021.

On one level this is a photograph of a half-eaten breakfast roll on the paper bag it was packed in, sitting on the window sill of a Manhattan hotel room on a cloudy winter morning. We can look at it as a little still life, I suppose, though perhaps a less appealing one than the traditional images of fruit and such. But there’s a story behind it.

For us a typical Manhattan breakfast might be coffee and pastry picked up somewhere on the street or, if we had the time and inclination, a “real breakfast” with eggs and more in a restaurant somewhere. (We follow a “two-and-a-half-meals-per-day plan when traveling, where the half meal could be morning or midday and is usually espresso plus something small.) But this visit was during the start of the Manhattan holiday omicron surge — what a strange description! — and those crowded little restaurants and shops were not so appealing. Fortunately, the Mille-Feuille Bakery was on the ground level of our hotel, so we’d head down there, pick something up, and return to our room… where the morning ritual was to start the covid rapid test, then sip coffee and eat pastry while the 15 minutes passed.

If it seems like there have been a lot of black and white photographs here recently, well, yes. I’m not certain why that is, but I do know that I began as a black and white photographer, and somehow seeing in monochrome remains at my visual core.

This photograph comes from a visit to a location we visited in order fo photograph a very different sort of subject — a beautiful (mostly) formal garden full of blossoming flowers. We went there after both of us had arrived at that wonderful point two weeks after being fully vaccinated, and it was liberating to wander (masked) through the gardens. However, somehow, among those beautiful and colorful flowers, this is what I came home with! I’m tempted to offer explanations and propose a few metaphors to consider as you view the image, but since I wasn’t really consciously thinking of them when I made the photograph, I’ll just leave the photograph here and let you decide.

A man carrying a bag hurries across a Manhattan street

This photograph happened so fast that I can’t even recall exactly where I was, though I suspect I was somewhere a few blocks below the southeast corner of Central Park, where I was headed with a plan of walking around the entire park and photographing what I saw.

One thing I’ll say about busy urban environments such as that in Manhattan — there is bound to be something or someone interesting in front of your camera very quickly. Once you begin to be able to sort out the subjects from the visual background noise, they can start to appear so rapidly at times that there is barely time to photograph them. Many of them suddenly appear and it is a matter of shoot now or lose it. (That happens occasionally in my more typical sorts of photography, but it is rarely so continuous as it is here.) I’m betting that I might have seen this intense-looking fellow before he started to cross the street, and I believe he was in such a hurry that he moved back behind the cars stuck in traffic to cross between them. Aside from photographing him, we had no interaction and he was gone as quickly as he appeared.
