It seems like there is always someone doing something interesting, unusual, compelling, typical, or in some other way worthy of attention in Manhattan. I’m not sure if that reflects on the character of the place or if it is simply a statistical matter — there are so many people there that you are bound to encounter, for better or worse, pretty much everything on the human spectrum. It is even possible to find isolated people, not part of any of the crowds that we associate with the place.

I saw this fellow while walking near the UN Plaza. It was morning — on a Sunday, if I recall correctly — and the area was relatively quiet. There wasn’t much of anything going on along this street, but there he sat, alone and not engaged in any particular discernible activity. In front of him was one of the characteristic morning piles of plastic trash bags, a common feature of this city.

Sticking with the Paris street photography theme a bit longer (perhaps quite a bit longer?), here is another photograph from Le Marais. Like several of the other recently-shared photographs, I made this one within a few moments of my “Je Suis Bleu” photograph featuring three women and a fascinating poster-covered wall. Initially that photograph was so central in my experience that day that I overlooked others made right before and after it. Writing an article about that photograph lured me back to the other raw files, and I ended up “discovering” several other interesting images.

This fellow figures in several of the exposures I made. There’s another where he is in the middle of a street, part of a larger group of pedestrians that is fronted by an “in your face” image of a walking woman. (You may see that one, too, before long.) Here he appears alone, just around the corner from the location of the “Je Suis Bleu” photograph. Viewers with sharp eyes may recognize the chalk head on the wall at far left.

I photographed this couple in Le Marais, Paris, not far from where we stayed for a few days near the end of August. If I recall correctly it was Friday evening, and I suspect that these folks were just arriving for the weekend. (I could be wrong — perhaps they live here and were returning from travels.) Their appearance in this scene was fortuitous. I had noticed the monumental weathered wall in the background. I was intrigued, but it hardly seemed like a photograph by itself. But with people in the frame such a surface can add interest.

Being a relatively light travel — at least when traveling by air — I can also identify a bit with these folks. This European trip was nearly six weeks long, yet we managed to restrict ourselves to carry-on luggage — one backpack-style bag plus a smaller “camera” bag that fit under airline seats. (We cheated a bit, too. We did ship some more formal clothes ahead of time for one special event that we attended in Germany.) Even with our relatively light loads, sometimes at the end of a day of travel those bags just… weigh you down. These folks look like they just might be having a similar moment…

Pile of trash piled on the sidewalk in front of upscale shops in San Francisco

Yesterday we drove down to Carmel for the opening reception of the Center for Photographic Art 2018 Members’ Juried Exhibition. (One of my photographs is in the show.) The show is really beautiful, and it includes one of the most consistently high quality photographs of such shows that I’ve seen. I can be a bit of a critic at exhibits (though usually quietly…), but the work in this show is of high quality both aesthetically and technically. If you are in the Carmel area between now and early August, I urge you to visit!

But what does that have to do with this photograph? As photographers we often tend to work in silos defined, at least partially, by our own stylistic preferences and by the notions of others about the style/genre of our own work. Talk to enough photographers and you’ll almost always find that landscape photographers aren’t just landscape photographers, portrait photographers aren’t just portrait photographers, photo-journalists aren’t just interested in photographing events, and so on. (There is sometimes a bit of frustration on the part of photographers who feel that their work has been too tightly pigeon-holed.) This isn’t just about photographers — it also applies to those who love to view photographic art. It is very much worth the effort to step outside of your comfort zone, look at and try to make sense of photography that deals with subjects that may not be your favorites. There is a lot more to say about this, but I’ll stop here — after all, this is just another daily photo post! ;-)
