A work counter in a San Francisco restaurant

In early December we took a couple of days off and stayed in San Francisco. Usually we would simply drive there and back or take the train, but we had concerts to attend on two nights in a row and the thought of doing that drive up (in rush hour traffic) and back (at around midnight) twice in a row was enough to persuade us to simply find a place to stay. Of course this meant we had a lot more time to wander around the City with cameras and to more opportunities to grab a meal at some new place. This restaurant is very close to a location where we frequently attend concerts, but it was the first time we tried it. It is a casual place, but that was just right this time.

Typically one might not want to be this close to the food preparation areas (and the entrance to the kitchen) but in a tiny place like this that cannot be avoided. Plus it gave this photographer an opportunity to photograph things that are more interesting — to me anyway! — than the people sitting at nearby tables. (And less likely to get me kicked out than if I had started photographing other diners!) The photograph is also a reminder of how good — and even fun — it can be to always have a small camera along, even when your primary goal isn’t photography.

Once again I interrupt the sequence of nature photographs, wildlife, and landscapes to bring you… a photograph inside pizza restaurant. I know that this range of subjects is a stretch for some viewers, but I hope it may be possible to see it all as part of my way of seeing the world. Early on the day I posted this it occurred that my background in music may offer at least a partial explanation. I’ve played (at least “played,” back when I was an active performer) in everything from bands performing in clubs, through jazz bands, to music theater, and on to symphony orchestras. I see no need to give up jazz because I may like Mahler, and I see no need to eschew photographing the city just because I also find beauty in the natural world.

So, back to our pizza restaurant. We were out walking about in Pasadena, really without any particular goal in mind — which is, I think, often a good way to make street photography. I photographed this scene through the restaurant window, and the tableaux just seemed to happen. I started out considering a piece of restaurant equipment visible in the window, but when I looked more closely I was this layout of pizza, the line-up of waiting customers, and what seems like idiosyncratic interior decoration.

A group of people at a coffee shop counter at night

This is the first of a group of two more photographs I’ll post from a recent bit of street photography in San Francisco, done on a Friday evening when I joined a small group of other photographers to photograph mostly after dark in urban areas. This on perhaps indulges my inner Edward Hopper a bit — I’m often fascinated by business windows at night and the idea of looking in from the outside to see whatever world is inside.

The photograph was a quick “grab” as I walked past this coffee shop and noticed the group of four people at the window-facing counter, each doing something different and each apparently unaware of the others. (And, of course: these are the places we all sit when we stop in coffee shops alone, right?)
