Winter Geese, Morning Fog

This was not the photograph I planned to make when I stopped here. The area was blanketed with tule fog, and no birds were visible. So I got out my tripod and turned my attention to making landscape photographs. As I worked the fog began to thin, and the sky above became faintly visible though the shallow fog. I heard geese approaching, and as the first group passed I grabbed my camera off the tripod, quickly reset things for handheld photography, and framed this subject as the next large group passed overhead.

There is a lot of this “gear switching” when I photograph migratory birds. One moment I might be photographing an individual bird in flight — which requires some specific camera settings. A moment later my attention may turn to a tree or clouds or the sky, and that sort of landscape photography uses entirely different settings and sometimes different lenses… or even a different camera!

This photograph closes out my posts for 2023. This time is an opportunity to look back across the year that is ending and to look forward to what may be coming in the new year. It was a bit of a different year for me photographically, particularly in that we took a long overseas trip (from which I still have many photographs to share). As a result, there were fewer of my familiar Sierra photographs… since I was thousands of miles away during months when I usually spend time in the mountains. What will the new year bring? We’ll start to find out soon enough!

This photograph comes from a November day of migratory bird photography, my first of the new season. I photographed intensely in during the window of beautiful light around sunrise, and at this point I turned my attention to sandhill cranes taking to the air among broken, sunrise-lit clouds, some of which are slightly obscuring the moon in this photograph.

Geese, Before Sunrise

On these days photographing migratory birds I arrive in darkness thirty to forty-five minutes before dawn. After driving several hours in the dark, the first thing I do is get out of the car. The first impression I always have is the sound of the birds as they get ready for morning fly-out. It is a wild, raucous thing and it always makes me smile. Before long more and more of the birds take to the air as the first light arrives. The birds flying across this brilliant early morning sky are geese.

This photograph would not have been possible on most days photographing in California’s Great Central Valley, and it depended on a particular conjunction of weather conditions. On the foggy days when I prefer to visit, of course, none of this would have been visible at all. On other clearer days the sky color is much more muted. On this visit a thin dome of clouds covered much of the sky, stretching far to the east beyond the crest of the Sierra Nevada. The first dawn light lit these clouds in a display of intense color.

Cranes, Sunrise, Winter Sky

Sandhill cranes fly in winter sky as sun rises above the Sierra Nevada.

For weeks I have been thinking about how little time remains before many of our migratory birds depart. I have been eyeing my schedule and the weather conditions looking for the right time to go look for the birds. Ideally I want fog, but that has been missing, first due to a string of very warm days and more recently to unusually cold and wet weather. So I stopped waiting for the perfect conditions that might not arrive, and I headed out to the Central Valley before the cold arrived.

I never know precisely what conditions I’ll encounter. On this visit I knew that forecasts predicted an incoming weather system. Fortunately the early clouds only improved the visual conditions. (Later it clouded up, but then it cleared well before sunset — sometimes I get lucky!) It is easy to point the camera at the rising sun out here, but usually that isn’t so productive since the light overwhelms everything else. But on this morning the sun rose into clouds that muted its intensity. I made this photograph as a flock of sandhill cranes flew past.
