Welcome to Oz

Welcome to Oz
“Welcome to Oz” — Street scene near Il Mago di Oz, and eccentric shop in the Italian town of Orvieto.

We’re back (figuratively) in the Italian hill town of Orvieto again for this photograph. The title comes from the sigh behind the white metal bench, and it refers to a nearby shop that I’ve shared in a previous photograph. The shop (“Il Mago di Oz”) is a strange and fantastical collection of, well, just about anything its proprietor thinks fits the theme.

Besides its connection to Land of Oz, the photograph includes features that are common on backstreets in Italian towns like this one. The building is weathered in an attractive way, it sits directly on the edge of the narrow street paved with stones, there are plants, and the light is softened in the shadows of buildings along the passageway.

Ristorante-Pizzeria, Venice

We spent time in Venice during our summer 2023 travels. We had been to Italy before but — it is almost embarrassing to admit — we had bypassed Venice. We had mixed feelings: On one hand, it is notorious for the throngs of tourists that pack the place during the summer months. On the other hand, it is Venice! So we went, and we’re very glad we did.

We (and by “we” I refer to Patty, who is a master planner) managed to find a wonderful little place to stay that was in a quiet corner of the city. Even during the busy hours there was never a tourist crush there, and in the evening and early morning it was downright quiet — even though the busy places began only minutes away. I made this photograph on an evening walk down one of the famously narrow Venice passageways, pointing the camera down an even smaller side passage toward this restaurant.

Fond Antico

I photographed this bit of Bologna architecture on a “random walk” during our 2023 summer visit. In the morning we headed out with no particular destination in mind, just expecting to wander and see what we might discover. We had a vague plan to start near the two famous towers not far from the central piazza, and then we just kept going until we came to the edge of the old part of the town. We turned around and began to improvise a different route back.

I can’t tell you exactly where I made this photograph, since by this time we were following our instincts rather than a map. We changed directions as we saw interesting things, and our route was anything but direct. I was first intrigued by the arched doorways on this building, but the light also fascinated me. The combination of reddish earth tones and light reflected from other buildings on the narrow street reminds me of walking the narrow canyons of the American Southwest.

Bar Ristorantino

This photograph captures the comfortable yet ssometimes-cruffy character that we saw in Bologna. A couple of people sit at outside tables located under on of the ubiquitous porticos, between old, weathered columns. Racks hold bicycles, also common here, and an impromptu string of lights is ready for the evening hours.

Some Italian cities that we’ve visited, especially some smaller ones, have a sort of quaint charm. Others, perhaps like Milano, can present a kind of sophistication. In others, like Florence, history seems to be at the forefront. To me, Bologna feels a bit more rough-edged and unpretentious, but in an altogether pleasing way.
