A group of orange-clad workers along the route of New York’s 2022 “Columbus Day” parade.

The crowd at this “Columbus Day” parade in Manhattan included just about every sort of person you can imagine – every walk of life, every ethnicity, every social class that you might encounter in Manhattan. Since this parade, also referred to as the “Italian Heritage” parade is a focal point for the Italian community, some in the crowd reminded me of people I’ve seem in Italy. (Here I’m thinking particularly of one fellow wearing some sort of ceremonial sash and hat — perhaps there will be a picture later.) Many were just there for the parade. Others, like me, were from out of town and happened to run into the event on a holiday morning.

This quartet fits somewhere into that wildly diverse crowd. They are what we might have called “hard hats,” with all that implied, in an earlier political era — except that now they comprise a more culturally diverse group. They were engaged in animated conversation when I passed and grabbed a photograph, attracted by the personalities and by the colorful attire.

Restaurant workers take a break in an alley under streetlights

Last summer we spent five weeks on the road — starting in New York, then going to London, Paris, Heidelberg, and finally Italy where we spent a week in the hills between Florence and Siena and then concluded our trip in Florence. If I have a regret, it is that we spent too little time in Florence. Our final stop there was almost an afterthought — we knew we would fly out of its airport, and we decided we might as well add a couple of days there. Anyone who has visited knows that a “couple of days” is not remotely enough for this city.

I loved walking around this city and photographing, especially in the mornings and again at night. On this last evening we decided we wanted to find a place for dinner, but we didn’t have a plan so we just wandered. We found a place — it isn’t hard here! — and then wandered some more, right on into the evening. At the very end of the evening, just yards from our hotel, we passed this street corner where employees were taking a break outside of a restaurant.

Construction work on the foundation of a new building at Hudson Yards

Along a section of the west shoreline of New York City there is a monumental construction project, mostly above the Hudson Yards, where there is a huge train yard. As I understand it, because the train yard cannot be moved, the gigantic towers being constructed here must be built on top of the rail yard, which seems like an almost unimaginable construction challenge. When finished, the train yard will still be there, but beneath the absolutely huge collection of towers housing businesses and residences. The project has already been going on for years, and I understand that it will not be complete until something after 2020.

Since the new upper end of the High Line Park wraps around the site, there are plenty of opportunities to photograph the work from good vantage points. Most of my photographs were looking across the site or up at the towers, but in this case I simply leaned out over the edge of the High Line and pointed the camera almost straight down, where a small crew was working on the foundation of some new structure amidst a scene of great complexity.

Hotel workers taking a cigarette break in the alley, Savoy Hill, City of Westminster, London

Very near this little alley is a large and famous hotel. We come up to this spot from the back way, so we did not see the typical hustle and bustle of the hotel entrance, instead just looking up a very nearly deserted side street to see a few employees on break, apparently having a smoke, We walked into this area and discovered a beautiful church hidden away on a corner to the right and out of the frame. After stopping to visit there, we continued our wandering and soon crossed in front of the hotel where these folks apparently work.
