Afternoon light on buildings of Lower Manhattan along the Hudson River.

By the time we got here we were starting to run out of energy. We had walked from west of Central Park in the 70s, wandering down through Hudson Yards, then following the High Line Park to its end at the Whitney Museum. From there we walked west toward the Hudson River, for reasons that I no longer remember. (Walking east and catching a subway train back toward our hotel might have been the more logical choice!)

We soon spotted the “Little Island,” an artificial island and park in the Hudson connected to the shore by a short walkway. This spot provides excellent views since it is both elevated and located just offshore, which opens the panorama along the waterfront. Here I’m looking south toward Lower Manhattan and a veritable Patagonia of urban peaks, topped by the World Trade Center Building.

Mono Lake, Autumn Haze

Haze settles over the expanse of Mono Lake on an autumn morning.

On this autumn morning I began photographing at Mono Lake well before dawn. My main idea was to work from a particular spot that has interesting shoreline contours and views towards distant peaks, starting when I could photograph the light of the intensely colorful pre-sunrise sky reflecting on the lake’s surface. I did that, and I stuck around just until the sun cleared those distant mountains — then I moved on to photograph the lake in more “normal” daytime light.

I initially went to this spot hoping to photograph some thin fog that was trying to establish itself along the lake’s shoreline, where cool autumn air flowed over the warmer lake waters. As I considered the scene I became more interested in the silhouettes of the distant island and hills, many miles away, and the textures and patterns formed by morning breezes on the surface of the immense lake.

Three spring ivy leaves emerge from the shadows.

Ivy is among a group of (sometimes) shade-loving plants whose leaves intrigue me. The shapes, colors, and textures are immediately appealing, especially in soft light. But the complexity of their arrangement can make it difficult to find compositions. The beauty of the leaves makes me think it will be easy, but the complexity challenges me.

Here a few newer leaves stood out a bit from the darker background leaves — both because of their newness and because they were a bit forward and in the light.

This viola almost seems to me to have a flame-like quality, at least if you can see the purple on the petals as seeming to emerge from that bright yellow center. If you look closely you may spot a surprise — a couple of small bugs hanging out on the petals.

This is another — and almost the last — of the photographs we made on a late-spring evening at the San Francisco Peninsula garden that has been the subject of so many recent images. In some ways this might have been the perfect lazy photographer evening: show up, get some snacks and a drink, sit next to a meadow and watch the evening light come on, the walk a few steps to nearby gardens to make photographs.
