Street Scene, Via Pescherie Vecchie, Bologna

There are, of course, narrow streets like this in almost every city, and they are abundant in old sections of Italian towns. This one extends from the main plaza in central Bologna. It is lined with small shops, restaurants, and fish markets.

I suppose these streets are narrow partially because they were originally created in an era before automobiles. But they still have advantages today. Obviously, they are very intimate and walkable, and restaurants and bars spill out onto them. Because they are narrow and the buildings are tall, they provide respite from the Italian summer sun and heat — and here awnings provide almost complete coverage.

We did quite a bit of walking on our August Manhattan visit. We have a (perverse, according to New Yorkers) habit of visiting during August, something that dates back to the days of summer vacation from my teaching work. But August isn’t exactly the most pleasant time to be in New York City… unless you are a fan of hot weather and ridiculous humidity levels. As a Californian, where we deal with the temperatures but emphatically not the humidity, I’m not one of those fans. Fortunately for us, on this visit the weather was actually quite pleasant.

Our walk on this day took us down into midtown, where we first stopped for an outdoor breakfast along one of the thoroughfares. (Here I discovered something new to me: “All you can drink morning cocktails” — you pay a higher fee and get bottomless cocktails for 90 minutes. Uh, no. Just no. We did not do that!) We resumed out walk, looped over and past the UN Plaza and then heading back toward the center of town, eventually heading back uptown on Madison, which appeared to have been closed for some sort of street market or fair.

Strolling, Le Marais

A couple strolls along a narrow Le Marais street, Paris.

This photograph comes from a 2016 visit to Paris… and a few other interesting European places. This narrow street is characteristic of this part of Paris, an area where some of the oldest original buildings and streets are still found.

This is also, in my opinion, one of the more interesting areas to photograph. As is the case with many gentrifying areas in big cities, lots of different populations come together here — tourists, members of more privileged classes, folks who may have lived here before it became trendy, various other folks passing through. The streets and the architecture are also fascinating, from the narrow and car-free lanes to the very old buildings and the interesting examples of street art.

Pedestrians stroll along the banks of the River Thames on a cloudy London day.

Today another photograph in the ongoing series that might be entitled “Dreams of Things We Used To Do and Hope To Do Again,” or “Photographs I Left Behind and Have Now Rediscovered.” The photograph comes from a 2013 overseas trip that took us first to London for roughly a week and then on to Germany and (a little bit) Austria. While part of the trip was spent in the bucolic setting of the Bavarian Alps, a good portion of it was in busy, crowded, lively urban settings. Remember those?

These trips of ours feature (among other things) some significant amounts of unplanned time when we can just wander and explore. While this approach means that we may not hit all of the Big Tourist Icons (or only discover them accidentally), it also gives us opportunities to immerse ourselves a bit more in unanticipated local experiences. I can hardly claim that this one — walking across the Millennium Bridge — fits that category precisely, though it was a lovely, cloudy scene along the river.
