Winter Tree, Dawn Sky

This photograph is the result of an unexpected and disappointing happenstance… that turned out fine in the end. I had driven a couple of hours before dawn to photograph in the Central Valley. But when I arrived I found a small group of people waiting outside a locked gate. That happens sometimes, and sooner or later the gate opens automatically. But this time it did not, and we could not find a way to open it. Rather than sit around and wait — and miss the sunrise — I headed off to look for alternatives.

A few miles away I came upon a creek and some surrounding wetlands where trees grow. I quickly found a few potential compositions in the rapidly arriving sunrise light. One of the first was this lone tree, silhouetted against ann intensely colorful sky. (Eventually I returned to that locked gate. Someone did finally show up annd open it.)

Levee Road, Tree, and Fog

This unassuming photograph of a rural levee road, tree, and fog in California’s Central Valley encapsulates the feeling of winter in this place for me. If you know the area or one like it, perhaps you can fill in the sound of bird calls, feel the cool and damp air, remember the unhurried feeling of moving along such a road early in the morning. I go here to photograph birds, but always end up focusing on the landscape, too.

As lovely as this light is, it can be challenging to photograph. A motto for me when I work on prints is, “more light!” However, here I have to suppress that urge a bit since the fog diminishes the brightness. (Though the high clouds are so bright they are hard to look at.) Color can also be challenging, with a tricky balance between the inherent blue of the foggy light and the warmer colors of plants and (sometimes) the sky.

Tightly packed buildings and large trees, Manhattan.

This photograph embodies something about Manhattan that I’ve mentioned before: For such an intensely urban place, there are a lot of examples of the natural world. It isn’t the kind of (ostensibly) “pure” nature that we see in the America West, but I sometimes think that its close juxtaposition with the city environment almost makes it more precious. We have whole forests out here in California, but in Manhattan a single tree can sometimes mean almost as much.

I saw this scene from the High Line Park as we walked its length last November. To those of use used to living with more space around and between us, the closeness of urban abodes along this park is surprising, and it almost seems voyeuristic to take a long look through the trees in someone’s tiny yard.

Bare Aspen Trees

A grove of Sierra Nevada aspen trees that have lost their autumn leaves.

This is not the first time I have photographed this little cluster of aspens growing very high up on a rocky hillside, though I think I finally found a way to photograph it the way I had in mind. Perhaps because the trees grow in rocky terrain, they seem to lose their leaves before other nearby trees. At the right time of day, given their elevated position, they are brightly lit by backlight as the sun tops the ridge beyond. The good light doesn’t last long here, and this time I think I hit it just right.

While I’m on the subject of aspens, I still have a pretty good number of Eastern Sierra fall color photographs to share from this year’s explorations. Over the next week or two I’ll mix them in with more photographs from our summer in Europe… and it won’t be all that long before I focus again on some of my other favorite cool season subjects: birds from the Central Valley, low elevation color from the western slopes of the Sierra and elsewhere… and perhaps a few surprises.
